I am so disgusted with the food industry these days.
Something I want to mention is how misinformed people can be about things they buy from the store…
Particularly “healthy” dairy alternatives like almond milk…
Oat milk…
And hemp milk.
Now, don’t get me wrong.
I believe in healthy dairy alternatives when done correctly…
Especially for protein shakes that you drink pretty much every day.
However, leading health store brands put a bunch of chemicals…
Preservatives…
And sugar in their formulas to make them taste good.
Take almond milk for example.
Almonds themselves are very healthy…
And I love them because they are a natural way to help you get shinier hair…
Better digestion…
And smooth skin.
They can reduce heart disease risk by lowering cholesterol (LDL, i.e., the “bad” one)…
And exerting anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
Best of all, despite being calorie-dense…
There’s no research linking eating almonds and gaining weight.
In fact, they may help with losing weight because they make you feel satiated longer.
Now, imagine my horror when I picked the “healthiest” brand of almond milk off the store shelf.
Want to know what the first ingredient was after water?
Pure cane sugar.
Then…
Sunflower lecithin
Locust beam gum
And some other fillers I can’t pronounce.
Almonds were the LAST ingredient.
So, guess how many almonds you get in every carton of “almond milk”?
(Hint: less than you can fit in the palm of your hand).
This part really triggered me.
This formula was so diluted that it only contained 6-11 almonds PER 1.5 LITER JUG!!
So if you’re like me and you use almond milk for protein shakes on a daily basis…
You could be drinking 400 extra calories from sugar, preservatives, and fillers…
