Then you know the harmful effects of sugar…

And how much I oppose processed sugar.

Excess sugar consumption can drain nutrients you need to keep your immune system strong…

Which is far from ideal.

Until I started my research, I really had no idea how dangerous sugar actually is.

So today, I want to share with you five essential nutrients your body exhausts when you eat sugar.

If you think you know the true harmful effects of sugar…

Then you may be surprised.

Number one is vitamin D.

Vitamin D made headlines three years ago for its ability to help your immune system fight off a certain virus.

While this is true, vitamin D plays a crucial role in your body’s overall immune system too.

Needless to say, low vitamin D levels puts your immune function at risk.

What harm does sugar cause for your vitamin D levels?

It actually increases expression of the enzyme responsible for breaking it down…

AND decreases expression of the one needed to make it.

Basically, sugar impairs your ability to make vitamin D and renders it useless faster.

This is the start of a vicious cycle because low vitamin D allows sugar’s inflammatory effects on the body to become even worse…

And puts you in danger of falling prey to cold and flu viruses.

Sugar’s depletion of vitamin D also affects calcium.

Vitamin D is necessary for calcium to be absorbed properly.

So, you consume sugar.

You now have less vitamin D.

Also less calcium.

On top of that, sugar consumption increases calcium loss.

How?

By removing its ability to be reabsorbed.

Similar to calcium…

Sugar makes you lose magnesium faster too by blocking reabsorption.

Once you lose the magnesium you have stored in your body…

Your body is unable to metabolize sugar properly.

This leads to impaired blood sugar regulation.

What does that mean?

Higher blood sugar levels and even lower magnesium levels.

But that’s not all.

Processed sugar also affects your vitamin C levels.

Insulin transports both sugar and vitamin C in to your cells.

Unfortunately, when both sugar and vitamin C are present at the same time…

Sugar always wins the battle.

Which means vitamin C waits until it can be absorbed.

But vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin…

Therefore, it can be excreted before it’s even had a chance to be used by your cells.

Because of this, you could be missing out on essential immune function…

Collagen formation.

Tissue repair…

Just to name a few.

Which leads to the final vitamin I want to discuss with you today: B vitamins.

B vitamins are involved in the process of converting sugar into energy.

When you eat sugar…

You need more B vitamins than normal.

If you don’t have any readily available…

Your body pulls them wherever it can.

As you know from Best of You…

Processed sugar only “takes” from your body.

It never adds or gives anything helpful.
