That’s why you find yourself reaching for the remote after dinner, almost without thinking.

Now, here’s the kicker:

Habits are not destiny. 

If you learn how to manipulate your habit loops, you can break old, unhealthy patterns and form new, beneficial ones.

  • Identify the Routine: The first step is to become aware of the behavior you want to change. Track when and why it happens.
  • Experiment with Rewards: Changing a habit isn’t about denying yourself a reward. It’s about finding a new, healthier behavior that delivers the same reward. Love the relaxation TV gives you? Try substituting it with a meditative walk or a restorative yoga session.
  • Isolate the Cue: What triggers your habit? Is it a time of day, an emotional state, or a certain environment? Understanding your cues can help you anticipate the habit and plan a healthier behavior.
  • Make a Plan: Once you know the components of your habit loop, you can make a plan to change it. It might take time and patience, but remember, consistency is key!
